On September 3rd 2019, the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) launched a new index, WIG-ESG, which replaced the RESPECT Index as of January 1st 2020. Grupa Azoty S.A. is among its constituents.
WIG-ESG consists of blue chips listed in the WSE’s WIG20 and mWIG40 indices. As in the case of other indices, the weights of companies in the index depend on the number of free-float shares adjusted based on their ESG ranking and assessment of compliance with the Code of Best Practice for WSE Listed Companies 2016.
Both institutional and individual investors are attaching increasing importance to responsible investment. The WSE has been promoting the highest ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) standards among listed companies for years. The stock exchange used to publish the RESPECT Index of listed companies with strong corporate social responsibility profiles. Published from November 19th 2009 until the end of 2019, the RESPECT Index fulfilled its educational role over the decade of its existence. On January 1st 2020, it was replaced by a new index WIG-ESG.
The first 2009 edition of the RESPECT Index comprised only 16 companies that received the top ratings in a social responsibility survey of Polish companies listed on the WSE.
Besides Grupa Azoty S.A., the other constituents were Apator S.A., Bank BPH S.A., Bank Handlowy, Barlinek S.A. and Barlinek Inwestycje, Elektrobudowa, Ciech S.A., Grupa LOTOS S.A., Grupa Żywiec S.A., ING Bank Śląski, KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., Mondi Świecie S.A., PKN Orlen S.A., PGNiG S.A., TP S.A., and Zakłady Magnezytowe Ropczyce.
The index brought together the WSE-listed companies with top corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance. The aim of the project was to promote the highest corporate governance standards among public companies in business, environmental and social terms. Grupa Azoty S.A. was a constituent of this prestigious index from its inception to the day it was discontinued.
