Grupa Azoty Group joins European Clean Hydrogen Alliance

A leader of the fertilizer and chemical industry in Europe and the largest hydrogen producer in Poland, Grupa Azoty has joined the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance. Launched by the European Commission in July 2020, the Alliance seeks, among other things, to deploy hydrogen as a competitive energy carrier in Europe.

Poland is EU’s third largest hydrogen producer. However, the bulk of output is used by producers for their own production purposes and only a small portion is traded. It should be stressed that the Grupa Azoty Group accounts for half of Poland’s hydrogen output. Its hydrogen is made from natural gas as a product for ammonia synthesis.

‘At Grupa Azoty, we are carrying out economic and technical analyses of producing electricity from renewable sources, which in the long term will reduce the carbon footprint of our production processes and allow us to produce, among other things, green hydrogen. Joining the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance is a natural step towards achieving this objective. It gives us the opportunity to form partnerships with key players in the energy sector, as well as to exert a tangible impact on shaping Europe’s hydrogen market,’ said Tomasz Hinc, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A.

The Alliance supports the implementation of the European hydrogen strategy. Its main objective is to identify and carry out investment projects involving the hydrogen value chain. The Alliance also seeks to identify barriers in scaling up clean hydrogen and contribute to research and innovation priorities.

As a side note, in July 2020 the Grupa Azoty Group became one of the signatories of the letter of intent to establish a partnership for building Poland’s hydrogen economy and to enter into a sectoral hydrogen agreement. As the signatory, Grupa Azoty is actively involved in consultations concerning the Polish Hydrogen Strategy.
