The town's deputy mayor, Fred Mahro, met with Henryk Słomka-Narożański, Tarnów's deputy mayor, and Andrzej Skolmowski, Grupa Azoty's Vice-President, to discuss economic cooperation between Tarnów and Guben.
“The acquisition by Grupa Azoty S.A. of all shares in Germany's ATT Polymers in 2010 marked the first step in the creation of a chemical giant. We are happy to welcome Guben's mayor here in Tarnów and hope that this strictly business partnership will inspire cooperation between the two towns also in other areas,” said Andrzej Skolmowski, Vice-President of Grupa Azoty.
“The distance between Tarnów and Guben is exactly 568 km. I have driven through Guben on a few occasions. It's a beautiful town, known for its mercantile traditions and distinctive architecture. It is my great pleasure to receive Guben's mayor, particularly so at a time when we are working hard to attract new investors to Tarnów,” said Henryk Słomka-Narożański, the deputy mayor of Tarnów.
“The chemical cooperation between Tarnów and Guben is immensely significant to the entire German region. Despite widespread scepticism at the beginning of this relationship, the company's financial performance and the commitment on the part of its management have been a clear sign that the cooperation should be continued. After many difficult years, Guben is finally heading in the right direction. Unemployment rates are improving as more and more people find jobs in the economic zone,” said deputy mayor Fred Mahro.
Grupa Azoty ATT Polymers GmbH, established over 50 years ago, manufactures and sells polyamide 6, marketed under the trade name of Alphalon. The company's business includes the processing of caprolactam into natural and modified polyamide 6. Its aggregate production capacities are about 45 kt per year. The production facilities in Guben are highly flexible.
In 1945, the town was divided into a western and eastern part - Guben on the German side of the border (now and independent town) and Gubin in Poland. Until December 21st 2007, Guben was a road and railway border crossing point between Germany and Poland. Home to nearly 19 thousand inhabitants, Guben forms a transborder agglomeration with Gubin, with a combined population of close to 36 thousand.
